      <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Yes, Dell must pay for the OS (and you can't find an Apple-friendly blog that hasn't decried the pricing on Win Vista) and Apple does not.</p>

<p>Of course, there are other differences -- Firewire being a big one, but I think these numbers show how Apple doesn't seem to want to drop system prices as components drop in price.  I mean c'mon, <strong>two percent</strong>?</p>

      <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>You make a good point.  One thing you didn't factor into your equation is the OS.  Apple owns and develops the OS, Dell does not.  I'm not sure how all that would come out in the wash, I'm just saying it still Apples and Oranges...erm...Dells. ;)  </p>

<p>Another perspective to consider is this.  As a business person, just because I can sell my widget for less than...or the same price as my &quot;competitor&quot; doesn't make it a good idea.</p>

<p>Full Disclosure:  I work for a MS partner and develop ASP.NET web applications by day.  At home I have two Apple computers and one PC (an old HP that somebody gave me when they were done with it).  My dream setup right now would be a top-o-the-line MacPro with a 30 inch display...sitting beside a Dell XPS laptop.  I'm currently looking for benefactors. ;)</p>
